About the Regional Community Benefit Fund

We want communities connected to our transmission network to share in the benefits of the clean energy transition.

Our Regional Community Benefit Fund supports ambitious, strategic projects that create lasting change for communities across the north of Scotland. It forms part of our long‑term investment in the network and our commitment to leave a positive legacy.

Round 3 of the fund is now open and will close to applications on Tuesday 24 November at 1pm.

£2 million will be available in this funding round.

What the Regional Fund supports

The Regional Fund supports community projects that:

  • Deliver transformational change – the Fund will prioritise projects that tackle underlying challenges, align with strategic priorities, influence wider change and create benefits that extend beyond the lifetime of funding awards.
  • Benefit more than one community, or can be replicated elsewhere – see the eligibility section below for a definition of what is considered to be regional.
  • Align with at least one of the three Fund themes.

The three Fund themes are:

  1. Skills and employability
  2. Heritage and culture
  3. Alleviating fuel poverty

Who can apply

Applicants must be a legally constituted community group, a non-profit organisation, or a registered charity. Applications will only be considered if they benefit communities within the SSEN Transmission network area, fall under the identified themes, and fit the fund assessment criteria.

Applications will not be accepted from statutory bodies (e.g. local authorities), however, these organisations are able to participate as a partner, with another organisation taking on the role of applicant. We will accept applications from universities and colleges.

Review of the Regional Community Benefit Fund

We worked with an external consultant to undertake an independent review of the Regional Community Benefit Fund by gathering views from a wide range of individuals and organisations.

This review has now concluded, and you can read the key findings in this three-page summary and for further details, you can read the consultant’s Executive Summary.

The key message from this consultation was that the Regional Fund is generally working well, but would benefit from some minor changes to ensure it delivers the greatest impact. We have reflected those recommendations in revisions to the Regional Fund Round 3 themes, priorities and other criteria.

New Strategic Investment Fund

One of the significant changes suggested by the consultation was the introduction of a new Strategic Investment Fund for larger-scale projects. This will complement and enhance our existing regional funding and will focus on ambitious, large-scale initiatives capable of delivering transformational change across multiple communities.
