Green light for new Moray substation to connect renewable energy projects to grid

6 November 2026

Planning approval for SSEN Transmission’s new Corshellach substation marks a major milestone in delivering the infrastructure needed to connect new renewable generation and battery storage to the electricity transmission network.

SSEN Transmission has welcomed Moray Council’s decision to grant planning permission for its new Corshellach substation near Dunphail.

The new 275/33kV substation will be built next to the existing Berryburn substation, around 12km south of Forres, and will provide the infrastructure needed to connect two customer projects to the transmission network: Cairn Duhie Wind Farm and the Corshellach battery energy storage system (BESS).

The project is an example of the investment in new transmission infrastructure required to connect different forms of low-carbon energy to the grid and support the transition to a cleaner, more secure and affordable energy system.

Moray Council’s Planning and Regulatory Services Committee unanimously approved the Corshellach proposals, with no objections received from members of the public or consultees.

Andy McLaren, Lead Project Manager at SSEN Transmission, said:

“We welcome Moray Council’s decision to approve our plans for Corshellach substation and thank everyone who has engaged with the project.

“This is an important milestone in delivering the infrastructure needed to connect two customer projects, including new renewable generation and battery storage, to the transmission network.

“Reforming the connections process is important, but it must be matched by building the network infrastructure that enables viable projects to connect.

“Corshellach is a great example of that delivery in action, helping connect more homegrown renewable energy and storage and supporting a cleaner, more secure and affordable energy system.”
