SSE opens new Glasgow office as energy investment powers Scotland’s economic growth

4 November 2026

SSE has officially opened its new office space in Glasgow’s Aurora building, providing a new base for around 640 colleagues from across the Group and demonstrating how the company’s major investment in Scotland’s energy infrastructure is supporting jobs, skills and economic growth across the country.

  • Aurora office brings together around 640 colleagues from across SSE as major investment in Scotland’s electricity networks supports jobs, skills and economic growth.
  • New Glasgow base brings together SSEN Transmission and SSEN Distribution colleagues alongside SSE’s corporate functions, strengthening SSE’s presence in the city as it invests in Scotland’s energy future.

The new space, spread over four floors at the Aurora building at 120 Bothwell Street in Glasgow, was officially opened by Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Tourism and Transport Stephen Flynn MSP, who met colleagues, graduates and trainees before unveiling a commemorative plaque.

Aurora brings together colleagues from SSEN Transmission and SSEN Distribution who are working to deliver and operate the electricity networks millions of customers rely on, alongside SSE’s Corporate functions and the Eastern Green Link joint venture with National Grid.

The space at Aurora adds to SSE’s existing office on Waterloo Street.

Its opening comes as SSE continues to invest significantly across Scotland’s energy system, including in the electricity networks needed to support Scotland’s economic and clean-energy ambitions. That includes investment in the transmission network required to connect and transport more home-grown renewable energy, and in the distribution network that delivers electricity to homes, businesses and communities across the north of Scotland. The new Glasgow base will provide another office hub for teams from across the group as that investment continues to grow.

A significant part of that growth is being driven by SSEN Transmission, which alone is progressing a £29bn investment plan in the north of Scotland. Its workforce has grown from around 400 people in 2019 to more than 3,000 today across its main offices in Perth, Inverness, Aberdeen and the new Aurora office space in Glasgow, with continued investment creating long-term opportunities for graduates, trainees and experienced professionals.

Central to that growth is the delivery of the electricity transmission infrastructure needed to connect more of Scotland’s home-grown renewable energy and transport it to where it is needed. The investment is expected to support up to 10,000 jobs in the north of Scotland and 24,000 across Scotland, while contributing an additional £8bn of GVA to the Scottish economy.

The programme is also expected to create significant opportunities for Scottish businesses, with around £1.6bn a year potentially flowing into businesses in the north of Scotland, alongside wider legacy benefits including support for 1,000 new homes and more than £100m in community benefit funding.

Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Tourism and Transport Stephen Flynn said:

“The transition to secure, affordable and low-carbon energy is one of the biggest transformations of our generation and I welcome SSE's continued investment in the people, skills and expertise that is needed to deliver it.

“It is fitting that SSE continues to strengthen its presence in Glasgow given it has long been recognised as a city of engineering excellence and is home to a wealth of talent across the energy sector.

“The Scottish Government will continue to work closely with the energy industry to help ensure it has the talent, skills and expertise needed to deliver a secure, sustainable energy system fit for the future.”

Rob McDonald, Managing Director of SSEN Transmission, said:

“The opening of Aurora is much more than an investment in new office space. It brings together colleagues from across SSE and reflects the scale of the investment and growth taking place across our business.

“For SSEN Transmission, our £29bn investment plan has the potential to be truly transformational for Scotland’s economy, supporting thousands of jobs, creating opportunities for Scottish businesses and developing the skilled workforce we will need for decades to come.

“We’re already seeing those benefits spread well beyond the locations where our infrastructure is being built. The growth of our presence here in Glasgow demonstrates how investment in the transmission network can support high-quality careers and economic activity right across Scotland.

“By working in partnership with the Scottish Government, industry, communities and our supply chain, we can deliver the infrastructure Scotland needs while making sure the jobs, investment and lasting economic benefits that come with it are captured here in Scotland.”

The opening also showcased the career opportunities being created by SSE’s investment, with Stephen Flynn meeting graduates and trainees based at Aurora who are developing their careers as the company expands its workforce.

SSE recently welcomed 87 new graduates across locations including Glasgow, Perth, Aberdeen and Inverness, marking a continued commitment to supporting early careers opportunities within the clean energy sector.

Rob McDonald added:

“Ultimately, investing in our electricity networks is about much more than wires, substations and pylons. It is about creating the foundations for economic growth, connecting home-grown energy, supporting the electrification of homes and businesses, strengthening our energy security and leaving a positive legacy for the communities and businesses we work alongside.

“Aurora puts Glasgow firmly within that story, bringing together colleagues from across SSE who are helping deliver Scotland’s energy future.  We’re proud that the investment we’re making is creating opportunities here in the city and across the country."
