Two new electricity transformers have been successfully delivered to SSEN Transmission’s Lochay substation, marking a key milestone in the ongoing upgrade of the local transmission network.
The deliveries, which took place through Killin on 12 and 13 May 2026, form part of the Lochay transformer replacement project, at the substation located adjacent to Lochay Power Station. The project will help ensure the substation continues to provide a safe and reliable electricity supply, while supporting the transport of renewable power across Scotland and beyond.
Due to their size and weight, delivery of the transformers required careful coordination as they were transported through Killin, crossing Dochart Bridge and travelling along the A827 before arrival at the site. The movements were managed by specialist haulier JB Rawcliffe, with a detailed traffic management plan in place to keep people safe and minimise disruption for road users and the local community.
SSEN Transmission worked closely with local partners to plan and deliver the operation, with temporary traffic controls used where required to ensure the safe passage of loads.
Louise Anderson, Lead Community Liaison Manager at SSEN Transmission, said:
“We’d like to thank residents and businesses in Killin for their patience and support during the delivery of these transformers. We recognise the disruption this type of activity can cause, and we’re delighted to have been able to deliver the infrastructure to site safely.
“Thanks also to Police Scotland and Transport Scotland for their support in making a safe delivery to site possible.
“The delivery marks a significant milestone for the Lochay substation upgrade, and we’re grateful to the community for helping us reach this stage.”
Construction on the Lochay Transformer Replacement Project began in 2023 and continues to progress well. The arrival of the transformers represents an important step forward as work continues to modernise the substation and strengthen the electricity transmission network in the area.
