Kintore to Dyce 132kV Overhead Line Reconductoring

About the Project

The existing 132kV overhead line between Kintore and Dyce forms part of the electricity transmission network serving the Aberdeen area. The line has been in place for many years and requires upgrading to support its continued safe and reliable operation. 

We are proposing to replace the existing conductors on the existing overhead line on approximately 10km of the northern circuit between Kintore and Dyce. The project would also include: 

• replacing associated fittings, including insulator sets 

• refurbishing the existing overhead line towers where required 

• carrying out repairs and applying protective coatings to existing towers 

• replacing one existing tower with two new suspension towers 

• undertaking associated access and temporary construction works. 

The majority of the work would take place on the existing overhead line. This allows us to upgrade and reuse established electricity infrastructure, rather than constructing an entirely new connection. 

Detailed construction planning and working arrangements are still being developed. We will provide further information to local residents, landowners and other interested parties as the project progresses. 

Why is the Project Required?

The proposed upgrade is required to improve the capacity and long-term reliability of the electricity transmission network serving the Aberdeen area. Replacing the existing conductor and fittings will help ensure that the line can continue to operate safely and reliably. 

The project also provides an opportunity to refurbish existing towers and replace infrastructure where this is required, extending the useful life of the overhead line. 

Consent and Regulatory Requirements

The proposed works, including the replacement of the existing tower, are part of our “keeping installed of an electric line” as per the Overhead Lines (Exemption) (Scotland) Regulations 2013 (the “Overhead Lines Exemption Regulations”). Subject to the restrictions set out in the Overhead Lines Exemption Regulations, which includes a requirement that the works will not have a significant adverse effect on the environment, the works do not require consent under Section 37 of the Electricity Act. 

We have provided the local authorities with prior notification of our intention to undertake these works, along with supporting environmental information, to comply with the requirements of the Overhead Lines Exemption Regulations.

Community Engagement

Throughout the life of our projects, we aim to work positively with local communities and keep people informed about what we are doing. This is particularly important when we are developing a proposal and we want to understand what local people think about our plans.

We endeavour to take the time to discuss proposals with local community councils, encourage engagement from the wider community and listen to the feedback we receive.

We will do our best to answer any questions and address issues or concerns that are raised with us.

When our project progresses into construction, we will continue working closely with the local community to ensure that our work has as little impact on the lives of those living and working in the area and as many long term positive effects as possible.
