Funding recipient story
The Peterhead Sea Cadets Unit has received £21,755 from SSEN Transmission’s Eastern Green Link 2 Peterhead Local Fund to replace its 25-year-old rigid inflatable safety boat (RIB) with a new Humber Destroyer 5.8M RIB. This upgrade is essential to maintain safety standards and ensure the continued delivery of high-quality waterborne training for young people.
Investing in safety and skills for the future
From April to September, cadets aged 10–18 take part in activities such as rowing, sailing, paddle sports, and power-boating within Peterhead Marina and Bay. These sessions, led by qualified volunteers, rely on the safety boat for emergency cover and instruction. The new RIB will provide proper seating for all crew members, reducing the risk of injuries during high-speed manoeuvres and meeting modern safety guidelines.

This investment will allow the unit to offer more boating hours, help cadets gain nationally recognised qualifications, and develop skills that can lead to careers in maritime industries. With careful maintenance, the new safety boat will serve the community for the next 25 years, ensuring generations of young people benefit from safe, engaging, and educational experiences on the water.
Marleen Mowatt from Peterhead Sea Cadets, said:
“The funding awarded to Peterhead Sea Cadets from the Eastern Green Link 2 Peterhead Local Fund has enabled the organisation to purchase a new rigid inflatable boat. This replaces our current 25-year-old vessel with an up-to-date model which is fitted with excellent safety and training features.
As well as providing essential quick response safety cover, it will also allow our well qualified instructors to teach navigation, radio and boat handling skills, all of which are transferable to possible future roles in the workplace. Also, because the new boat is larger and has a more powerful engine, cadets can now extend their coastal voyages to gain additional qualifications within the RYA syllabus.
Our adult volunteers are extremely grateful to SSEN Transmission for their support with this project and for investing in our young people.”
