What is the Shetland HVDC Local Fund?

The Shetland HVDC 260km subsea link connects Shetland to the mainland just north of Wick, securing power in Shetland for future generations.

The Community Benefit Fund associated with this project supports the communities of Tingwall, Whiteness and Weisdale in Shetland, and Sinclair’s Bay and Wick in Caithness, as they are situated close to the infrastructure.

What is the fund value?

The total value of the fund is £677,250, which will be split equally between Caithness and Shetland, and delivered over a period of 4 years. Therefore, each Community Council area will receive the following:

  • Tingwall, Whiteness and Weisdale – £338,625 (£84,565 per year)
  • Wick – £169,312 (£42,328 per year)
  • Sinclair’s Bay – £169,312 (£42,328 per year)

How will the fund be delivered?

The total fund value will be provided to key community organisations, who will deliver priority projects that have been identified by the wider community.

In Shetland, the funding will be delivered through Win Furt, a charity set up by the local people of Tingwall, Whiteness and Weisdale to lead on community projects. Win Furt aim to use the funding for the construction of cycle and footpaths in the area, following feedback from the community which identified this as a priority.

In Caithness, the funding will be delivered by Wick Development Trust, for the Wick Community Council area, and Sinclair’s Bay Trust, for the Sinclair’s Bay Community Council area. Each Trust will deliver projects according to local consultation and priorities.
