Shetland HDVC Link Fund
Funding for communities in Shetland and Caithness
Status: This funding is being delivered directly by local organisations
About the Shetland HDVC Local Fund
We recognise that major infrastructure projects have a direct impact on the communities they pass through. The Shetland HDVC Local Fund is designed to ensure communities share in the benefits of this investment.
The Shetland HDVC Local Fund supports local projects in communities affected by the Shetland HVDC Project, helping to deliver positive, lasting outcomes shaped by local priorities.
This fund is being delivered directly by local organisations to support causes agreed by local people in Shetland and Caithness.
The Shetland HVDC Project connects Shetland to the mainland power grid via a 260km underground cable, securing power for generations and supporting renewable energy.
Fund value
The total value of the fund is £677,250, which is split equally between Caithness and Shetland, and being delivered over a period of four years from 2025-2029.
Designed in collaboration with communities
The way this fund is delivered has been shaped by local community councils and community representatives.
In Shetland, the funding is delivered through Win Furt, a charity set up by the local people of Tingwall, Whiteness and Weisdale to lead on community projects. Win Furt aim to use the funding for the construction of cycle and footpaths in the area, following feedback from the community which identified this as a priority.
In Caithness, the funding is delivered by Wick Development Trust for the Wick Community Council area, and Sinclair’s Bay Trust for the Sinclair’s Bay Community Council area. Each Trust delivers projects according to local consultation and priorities.

Our commitment to communities
The Shetland HDVC project is a long‑term investment in the region’s energy future. Alongside this, we’re committed to working with communities to ensure the benefits are shared fairly and deliver real, meaningful outcomes.
Through the Shetland HDVC Local Fund, we want to support projects that strengthen communities now and leave a positive legacy for the future.
