The Barn Arts, Aberdeenshire

Creating connections through art

Third Stage Art was a creative engagement programme delivered by the Barn for individuals aged 55+ who are vulnerable to low wellbeing and loneliness. £5,000 funding from the East Coast Local Fund was used to provide high-quality, artist-led workshops in an accessible, welcoming environment.

The funding was used to deliver 20 workshops, engaging 250 participants, with many attending multiple sessions. Participants co-designed sessions with professional artists, including printmaking and creative exploration of the human form and nature.

Participants reported improved mood, confidence, social connection and cognitive stimulation. The programme also engaged referral partners and supported accessible participation, including transport and carer support.

Adam Pushkin, Co-Director of the Barn, said:

“Third Stage Art is a much-loved community outreach programme delivered by the Barn. This funding has enabled us to connect older people with professional artists, offering high-quality creative activities such as printmaking and drawing.

These sessions are co-designed with participants while reflecting the Barn’s wider creative programme, which is rooted in a deep connection to nature. We regularly see participants return, leaving workshops not only delighted by what they’ve created, but also with a strengthened sense of wellbeing and connection to others.”
