Housing Strategy
1,000 New Homes for the north of Scotland
Our Housing Strategy aims to overcome rural housing challenges while supporting the decarbonisation of the UK's energy supply.
The strategy directly impacts local communities, supports sustainable development, and ensures the success of critical infrastructure projects essential for the UK's transition to renewable energy. By addressing housing challenges in rural areas, we will contribute to the region’s economic growth, improve living conditions, and leave a lasting, positive legacy for the communities involved.
Our Housing Solution
The decarbonisation of the UK energy supply demands an unprecedented scale of infrastructure projects in rural Scotland.
We must overcome the dual challenge of providing housing for a massive workforce - peaking at 5,000 workers by 2027 - and supporting local communities amid a rural housing crisis. Without a strategic plan, this could worsen existing housing shortages and strain local resources.
But why does this matter?
In Scotland, there are currently communities already experiencing housing shortages, which in turn is affecting both affordability and access to housing.
There is a great influx of transient work, which if unmanaged can disrupt local economies and create tension.
The timely delivery of critical transmission infrastructure across the Scottish network is at risk without adequate accommodation. We want to ensure that our colleagues who are working directly on the network can do so safely and efficiently.
