Operating the high-voltage electricity transmission network in the north of Scotland, we play a vital role in the UK’s clean energy transition. This year, against the backdrop of unprecedented growth in the electricity transmission sector, we have continued to deliver on our commitments, strengthen the resilience of its network, and prepare for the transformative decade ahead.

A year of delivery and ambition

2024/25 was a year defined by major milestones, including, amongst other things:

  • Energisation of the Shetland HVDC Link, the UK’s first transmission connection to the islands, strengthening security of supply and unlocking Shetland’s renewable potential.
  • Approval of the Skye Reinforcement Project, ensuring future network resilience and capacity in the Western Isles.
  • Submission of the RIIO-T3 Business Plan, setting out at least £22bn of investment between 2026 and 2031 – with the potential to rise to more than £31bn – to enable clean power, strengthen energy security, and create tens of thousands of skilled jobs.

Looking ahead

With eleven major projects underway as part of its Pathway to 2030 programme, SSEN Transmission is on track to deliver the largest investment in Scotland’s electricity transmission system in history. By 2030, the network will have the capacity to meet 20% of GB demand for clean power.

Rob McDonald, Managing Director of SSEN Transmission, said:

“2024/25 has been a year of great progress. We have delivered landmark projects, accelerated our sustainability journey, and continued to connect clean power at record pace.Looking ahead, we remain focused on delivering the network for net zero – one that is safe, reliable, and sustainable, while ensuring that communities across the north of Scotland share in the benefits of the energy transition.”
