  • Funding marks one of the first major agreements under commitment to deliver 1,000 new homes across the north of Scotland

  • Affordable housing among a broad range of economic and social benefits proposed Kintore to Tealing project will deliver

SSEN Transmission is helping to deliver 47 new homes in Brechin as part of its proposed Kintore to Tealing 400kV overhead line project, after providing a multi-million-pound funding boost that will support a new housing development in the Angus-based town.

In a major boost for affordable housing provision in the area, 47 new homes are planned for the Brechin Infirmary Housing Development, after the business agreed to support North East-based housing developer CHAP Group with significant funding for the site, with the new homes now expected to be completed by the end of 2027.

The homes will initially accommodate workers involved in the construction of the proposed Kintore to Tealing project before being made available to the local community, as a mix of affordable and social housing.

The project – a key component of SSEN Transmission’s ‘Pathway to 2030’ investment programme – has helped the housing development get off the ground, as the business seeks to accommodate the workforce that will be needed to construct the new overhead line.

Initial funding will unlock the development and allow activities to progress, and SSEN Transmission intends to provide further significant, multi-million-pound funding for construction works.

The funding marks one of the first major agreements that SSEN Transmission has reached with a housing developer under its housing strategy commitment to support the delivery of 1,000 new homes across the north of Scotland as a legacy of its workforce accommodation requirements.

It also provides a clear example of the economic and social benefits that upgrading the electricity grid can deliver, with the Brechin housing development creating and sustaining jobs and apprenticeship opportunities, while also delivering much-needed affordable housing to the town.

Caryn Jack, SSEN Transmission’s Programme Director for the Kintore to Tealing project, said:

“We’re proud to be supporting the delivery of new homes in Brechin through our partnership with CHAP Group. This development is a great example of how our projects can deliver lasting benefits for local communities – not just by strengthening the electricity network to achieve clean power and energy security, but by creating opportunities for people and places to thrive. As we progress the Kintore to Tealing project, we want to ensure that our investment leaves a positive and lasting legacy, helping to provide much-needed housing and supporting the long-term resilience of the town.

Hugh Craigie, CHAP Group Managing Director, said:

CHAP is delighted to receive the backing of SSEN Transmission for this development of much-needed housing in the Brechin area. We look forward to seeing the hard work, of the combined SSEN Transmission / CHAP team, come to fruition. CHAP is proud to have played a part in the development of SSEN’s ambitious plans to support 1,000 new homes, and we are excited to embark upon the delivery phase.”

Welcoming the news, Deputy First Minister Kate Forbes said:

“Scotland’s enormous renewables capabilities offer an unprecedented opportunity to create jobs and deliver economic growth across our local, regional and national economies for decades to come. It is of course vital to ensure that the supporting infrastructure, including housing, is in place to support the workforces and communities that this opportunity presents. This will take a shared endeavour, with the public and private sectors working together to ensure that the right homes are delivered in the right place at the right time. SSEN Transmission’s commitment to support the creation of 1,000 new homes across the north of Scotland is a welcome example of this working in practice and I look forward to the delivery of the initiative benefitting local communities for generations to come.”

SSEN Transmission continues to explore other opportunities to deliver new housing in the Angus area and will keep the local community updated on any further announcements.
