A shinty club in Argyll is celebrating the delivery of new mobile dugouts, made possible through a sponsorship agreement with SSEN Transmission that underlines the company’s support for one of Scotland’s oldest traditional sports.

Kilmory and Dunadd Camanachd has received two six-seater dugouts to provide shelter for players and staff during the shinty season. SSEN Transmission’s Craig Murrail substation, which is currently under construction, is located close to the club’s home ground.

Shinty, a sport with deep roots in Highland history, has been played for centuries and remains a vital part of community life in Argyll. Kilmory and Dunadd Camanachd continue this legacy by fielding one adult male team (Kilmory), one adult female team (Dunadd), while also nurturing the next generation through three youth teams with over 50 children.

Seona Laird, Fundraising Officer for the club, said: “We’re delighted to receive this donation from SSEN Transmission to purchase new mobile dugouts which will be incredibly beneficial to all our teams.

“We’re proud to be part of a tradition that stretches back generations. These new dugouts are more than just shelter—they’re a symbol of our commitment to preserving and growing the game of shinty in our community.

“Our pitch is exposed to the elements, and having a covered space will make a real difference for players and coaches of all ages. It’s about wellbeing, performance, and pride in our sport.”

The club, named Community Club of the Year in 2023 by the Camanachd Association, has seen a surge in youth participation, reflecting a renewed interest in Scotland’s native sports.

Chris Bell, Head of Stakeholder Engagement from SSEN Transmission, added: “We’re delighted to support Kilmory and Dunadd Camanachd, a shinty club based close to our Craig Murrail substation, as they keep the heritage of shinty alive and inspire the next generation of players.

“At SSEN Transmission, we believe that heritage plays a vital role in shaping strong, resilient communities. Supporting a sport as historic and culturally significant as shinty reflects our commitment to honouring local traditions while investing in the wellbeing of the people who live and work in the areas we serve. We wish the club every success for the season.”
