Plans submitted for new Dundee substation
- Proposed Stannergate132kV substation to support rail electrification and enhance local network reliability
- Construction scheduled to begin in early 2027 for 2029 completion
A planning application for a new 132kV substation in Dundee that will support rail electrification while improving local network resilience has been submitted to Dundee City Council.
The proposed new substation in the Stannergate area near Dundee Harbour will include a new 132kV feeder station supporting Network Rail’s ambitions to electrify the rail network. It will also replace the existing Dudhope substation that helps provide power to Dundee, which is now approaching 60 years of service. In addition, it will support local employment opportunities and deliver £530,000 in community benefit funding associated with new transmission infrastructure, that will be available to support projects in the local community.
Initial work is anticipated to begin next year before full construction begins in early 2027, with the substation scheduled for completion in 2029. The project will involve cabling works providing connections to the rail network and existing transmission and distribution networks, and every effort will be made to keep disruption to a minimum. Robert Crisp, SSEN Transmission’s Project Manager, said:
"With the existing Dudhope substation nearing the end of its operational lifetime, the proposed Stannergate 132kV substation will enhance local network security and help ensure a reliable supply of power to the city. At the same time, the associated new feeder station for Network Rail will support its ambitions to electrify the rail network, in line with the company’s decarbonisation targets. This project demonstrates how electricity transmission network upgrades are helping keep the lights on locally, while supporting wider clean energy ambitions in the transport sector and in our cities – as well as delivering substantial employment and community benefit opportunities. We’d like to thank all those who provided feedback on our proposals through our statutory pre-application events held last year, which have been key in helping shape our plans. We now look forward to working with Dundee City Council and stakeholders as part of the planning submission process."
