SSEN Transmission relocates cable works site in response to community

SSEN Transmission has acted on feedback from the local community by relocating a proposed temporary construction compound in the Contin area, which will support work on the underground cable section of the Western Isles HVDC Link.

The decision to move the compound to a new site east of the previously proposed location at Kinellan follows recent consultation activity, including a community event held in Contin in December. This change reflects our commitment to listening to local concerns and minimising disruption wherever possible.

Working in partnership with local contractors RJ McLeod, we will construct the temporary compound on the revised site, which is located nearby. Discussions with landowners are being finalised, and further details regarding the location will be shared in the coming weeks.

Advance works are expected to begin in early February, with main earthworks starting from mid to late February. Any tree-felling activity will be supported by specialist personnel responsible for guiding and directing the safe movement of vehicles and heavy machinery, ensuring safe access to core pathways is maintained at all times.

Niall Macleod, Project Director for SSEN Transmission, said:

“We are committed to working with the local community and our partners to ensure this mainland cable section of the Western Isles HVDC Link is delivered safely and responsibly.

The relocation of the temporary compound came as a direct result of feedback during recent consultation events, and demonstrates our willingness to respond to concerns and reduce disruption while allowing the project to progress.

We remain committed to open and transparent communication throughout the construction of the mainland cable connection, and will continue to provide timely updates as works progress.

Our dedicated project inbox remains open for any questions or feedback, and we encourage anyone who wishes to get in touch to do so.”
