Planned A82 closures to support delivery of major electrical equipment to Creag Dhubh substation
1 June 2026
Traffic restrictions will be introduced on parts of the A82 from this week, to support the delivery of two new Super Grid Transformers to SSEN Transmission’s Creag Dhubh substation in Argyll.
The deliveries, which are scheduled to take place in stages from Thursday 4 June to Thursday 18 June, form part of a carefully coordinated operation to transport critical equipment to the site. This includes shipping the units from Poland to Clydebank, before their onward journey to the substation site near Cladich, covering approximately 90 miles.
Super Grid Transformers (SGTs) are among the largest components on the electricity network, often weighing several hundred tonnes. They are used to step voltage up or down, enabling electricity to be transmitted efficiently across the network.
Moving these components requires specialist vehicles, careful planning and detailed traffic management. We have been working closely with key partners, including Transport Scotland, BEAR Scotland, Police Scotland and local authorities, to plan the deliveries and minimise disruption as far as possible.
Planned road closures
To allow specialist vehicles carrying the SGTs to safely cross infrastructure near Crianlarich, temporary overnight road closures are scheduled on a short section of the A82 between Crianlarich and Tyndrum, as follows:
- Sunday 7 June to Monday 8 June (10pm to 5am)
- Tuesday 16 June to Wednesday 17 June (10pm to 5am)
This will involve the closure of a section of the A82 at Inverherive at the Herive Burn, to allow the load to cross safely. A specially designed bridging deck will be placed on top of the existing bridge to provide additional reinforcement during the crossing. Local diversions and signage will be in place, and emergency services access will be maintained.
Additional traffic management measures
To support the wider delivery operation, traffic management is scheduled along sections of the A82 to facilitate delivery activities and ensure the safety of both road users and delivery teams.
This will include an inside lane layby closure between Firkin and Rossdarroch on the A82 south of Tarbet from Tuesday 2 June to Friday 19 June, with temporary traffic lights in place overnight while the layby is in use, to manage traffic.
Temporary parking restrictions are also scheduled to be in place on Dumbarton Road from Thursday 4 June to Friday 5 June, and Wednesday 10 June to Thursday 11 June, to help ensure the safe passage of delivery vehicles.
Throughout this period, road users are advised to plan journeys in advance, allow extra time for travel, and follow all signage and diversion routes. All scheduled closures and restrictions are dependent on weather conditions, and subject to ongoing coordination with key partner organisations.
Lee Biddulph, SSEN Transmission’s Project Manager for the Creag Dhubh substation project, said:
“We recognise these restrictions may cause some disruption and would like to thank local communities and road users for their patience while this complex operation is carried out.
These transformers are critical to strengthening the local transmission network and supporting the growth of renewable energy in Argyll.
Transporting components of this scale is a complex operation, which is why we have worked closely with our road traffic partners to plan deliveries carefully and keep disruption to a minimum, with all scheduled closures and restrictions dependent on weather conditions and coordination with key partner organisations.
We encourage people to plan ahead, allow extra time for their journeys, and follow all signage and diversion routes to help keep everyone safe."
