Skye Reinforcement Local Fund
Funding for communities along the Skye Reinforcement project route
Fund Status: In development with local communities
About the Skye Reinforcement Local Fund
The Skye Reinforcement Project will replace the existing overhead line between Fort Augustus and Skye. As part of the project, substations at Edinbane and Broadford will be extended and upgrade work on the substation at Fort Augustus will also be carried out.
We recognise that major infrastructure projects have a direct impact on the communities they pass through. The Skye Reinforcement Local Fund is designed to ensure communities share in the benefits of this investment.
This fund will support local projects benefitting communities along the Skye Reinforcement Project route, helping to deliver positive, lasting outcomes shaped by local priorities.
Who the fund is for
The local fund is aimed specifically at communities close to the project route, including:
- Skye & Raasay
- Glenelg & Arnisdale
- Glengarry
- Fort Augustus & Glenmoriston
Fund value
The current total lifetime value of this local fund is £5.45 million.
The fund value is calculated in line with UK Government Guidance, and is made up of community benefit funding associated with the infrastructure of the following projects:

- Invergarry to Quoich Switching Station Overhead Line
- Edinbane Substation extension
- Broadford Substation extension
- Fort Augustus Substation upgrade
In addition to this local fund, communities can also apply to our Regional Fund, which supports larger scale, strategic community projects across the north of Scotland.

Designed in collaboration with communities
It is important to us that our local funds are designed in collaboration with the communities within that local area, ensuring that the funding is distributed to have the maximum possible impact.
Fund consultation
We are currently analysing results from the consultation for the Skye Reinforcement Local Fund, which closed on 10 April 2026. As part of the consultation, we hosted in-person events in Broadford, Kyleakin, Portree, Dunvegan, Glenelg, Glengarry and Fort Augustus in March 2026. We also held two online sessions and distributed an online survey.
Through the consultation, we asked community members who live or work in the community council areas in Skye & Raasay, Glenelg & Arnisdale, Glengarry and Fort Augustus & Glenmoriston to share their views on:
- The area of benefit for the fund (i.e. where the funding should be available)
- The priorities for the fund (i.e. what is most important to your community and how should the money be best used)
- The structure of the fund (i.e. how many years the fund should be available and what level of funding should be available for projects)
The views gathered during the consultation will now be used to create the fund proposal, which will be shared with key community representatives (e.g. community councils, development trusts) for feedback before being finalised. The finalised fund details will be published on this webpage in summer 2026.
