Overview
Shin – Loch Buidhe 132kV Rebuild - Pre-Application Consultation (PAC) Event
SSEN Transmission invites you to share your views with us.
Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) Transmission is holding a drop-in consultation exhibition on our proposals to install and retain a replacement 132kV overhead line between Shin Substation and Loch Buidhe Substation, including the construction of a new cable sealing end compound and dismantling of the existing overhead line between the existing Shin Substation and Loch Buidhe Substation, near Bonar Bridge.
This is the final event for the proposed alignment, design process, the planning process, environmental and engineering considerations and maps.
The event details are as follows:
Date and Time: 24 March 2026, 3 - 7pm
Venue: Bonar Bridge Community Hall, Lairg Road,
Bonar Bridge, IV24 3EA
More details can be found on the Project Update section of this website.
About the Project
The existing overhead steel tower line which runs between the Shin substation and Loch Buidhe substation was constructed in the 1960s and is operated at 132kV. The initial intention was to reconductor the existing overhead line between the Shin substation and the Loch Buidhe substation, however, it was identified that the existing towers would not be suitable for the heavier conductor proposed and unable to accommodate the new conductor rating (348MVA).
To meet the required ratings, this will be achieved via the construction and operation of a new 132kV double-circuit overhead line to replace the existing overhead line.
Why is the Project Required?
The need for the project is driven by onshore renewable wind generation in the area around the existing Shin and Loch Buidhe substations. The volume of contracted generation has significantly increased; the increase in generation background requires reinforcement of the network for SSEN Transmission to maintain compliance with the National Electricity Transmission System Security and Quality of Supply Standard (NETS SQSS).
Community Engagement
Throughout the life of our projects, we aim to work positively with local communities and keep people informed about what we are doing. This is particularly important when we are developing a proposal and we want to understand what local people think about our plans.
We endeavour to take the time to discuss proposals with local community councils, encourage engagement from the wider community and listen to the feedback we receive.
We will do our best to answer any questions and address issues or concerns that are raised with us.
When our project progresses into construction, we will continue working closely with the local community to ensure that our work has as little impact on the lives of those living and working in the area and as many long term positive effects as possible.

How we’re embracing artificial intelligence (AI)
We intend to use AI to assist our experienced teams in the analysis of your feedback, so we can categorise key points raised more quickly. You can learn more about how we’re utilising AI on this dedicated web page.
