Overview
About the Project
In order to support the continued growth in onshore and offshore renewables across the north of Scotland, supporting the country's drive towards Net Zero, investment in network infrastructure is needed to connect this renewable power and transport it from source to areas of demand across the country.
Extensive studies have confirmed the need to reinforce the onshore transmission infrastructure between Spittal and Beauly. To enable these reinforcements, a new 400kV substation is required in Loch Buidhe and will connect to:
- A new 400kV connection between Spittal and Beauly
- The existing Loch Buidhe 275kV Substation

Planning Application Update
While the appeals process is ongoing, we will continue to carry out pre‑construction ground investigation works and surveys at proposed substation sites. These activities are permitted under existing development rights and are necessary to further understand ground conditions and identify site features, helping to inform detailed design and construction planning should consent ultimately be granted. Undertaking this work at this stage allows the project to progress responsibly and efficiently should consent be granted, without prejudicing the outcome of the appeals.
We’d like to thank everyone who has taken the time to share their views on our proposals up to this point.
3D Visualisations Portal
To help provide an indication of what the substation and HVDC converter station may look like within the local environment, we've created a 3D visualisation portal. The portal can be accessed via the following link, where you can view various viewpoints from around the proximity of the site as well as a flythrough video.

Pathway to 2030
We are investing over £29bn to upgrade the network infrastructure across the north of Scotland between now and 2030. As a mass transporter of renewable energy, the north of Scotland electricity transmission network has a major role to play in supporting the delivery of Scotland and the UK’s 2030 net zero targets.
This investment is critical to powering change, improving energy security using home-grown low carbon electricity, and supporting significant economic and employment opportunities across the UK, 17,500 of which will be in Scotland and 8,400 of these in the north of Scotland. Other benefits the projects will bring include over £100m of Community Benefit Funds, contributing to the development of 1000 properties in the north of Scotland and delivering 10% net gain in biodiversity.
The projects include new overhead lines, substations and subsea links and are part of a major upgrade of the electricity transmission network across Great Britain.
Stakeholder Engagement
The New Loch Buidhe 400kV Substation Project is currently in the development stages and is subject to extensive consultation with stakeholders. In this video, Rebecca Gay, Project Manager for the overhead line project, and Community Liaison Manager, Martin Godwin, describe the approach we are taking in developing our proposals and the opportunities that are available for stakeholders to feed into the design process.
