Overview
About the Project
We are developing a project which will seek to create a joint connection between SSE Renewables Tangy IV Wind Farm and Belltown Power Cnoc Buidhe Wind Farm, both are located approximately 10km north-west of Campbeltown, in Argyll. The overall aim of our project is to connect these wind farms to the existing infrastructure at, or near Carradale substation.
Tangy IV and Cnoc Buidhe were originally two single circuit wood pole connections, both close to Lussa Loch and connecting at, or close to, Carradale. However, following an application by the developer to increase the output for the Cnoc Buidhe Wind Farm the required Transmission structure changed from an initial trident wood pole to a single circuit tower.
The project team have reviewed potential solutions for the connection of both wind farms from an engineering, environmental, land and cost perspective. The most efficient solution involves a shared use double circuit overhead line tower connection for both Tangy IV and Cnoc Buidhe wind farms.
This will mean that there will be one construction plan which will lessen the impact of the wind farm on the local environment and communities.
SSEN Transmission are proposing to construct a new 132 kilovolt (kV) connection with a combination of overhead line (OHL) and underground cables (UGC) between the Tangy IV Wind Farm and Cnoc Buidhe Wind Farm substations and the existing Carradale Grid Supply Point (GSP) - a distance of approximately 21.5 km.
The developer of Tangy IV Wind Farm has submitted an application to the Scottish Government under Section 36 of the Electricity Act 1989 and has been consented for a 100-megawatt (MW) Wind Farm. The Cnoc Buidhe Wind Farm are aiming to submit their S36 application in 2024. They have an indicative capacity of 198MW comprising up to 30 turbines. A connection date of May 2029 is currently planned for Cnoc Buidhe and April 2029 for Tangy IV.
Under the terms of Schedule 9 of the Electricity Act 1989, SSEN Transmission is therefore obliged to connect the Tangy IV Wind Farm and Cnoc Buidhe Wind Farm to the transmission network by the contracted connection date.
The proposed project would involve:
- Approximately 8.5km of an Underground Cable between the Tangy IV Wind Farm (5.5km) and Cnoc Buidhe Wind Farm (3km) substations through the proposed Cnoc Buidhe Wind Farm to the terminal overhead line connection point, north of Collusca Water.
- Approximately 13km of 132kV double circuit overhead line supported by steel lattice towers, from north of Collusca Water to northwest of Carradale Substation.
- Approximately 650m underground cable to the existing Carradale Substation.
- An extension to Carradale Substation to connect Tangy IV Wind Farm and Cnoc Buidhe Wind Farm to the grid whilst ensuring all protection equipment is installed in the event of a fault.
Community Engagement
Throughout the life of our projects, we aim to work positively with local communities and keep people informed about what we are doing. This is particularly important when we are developing a proposal and we want to understand what local people think about our plans.
We endeavour to take the time to discuss proposals with local community councils, encourage engagement from the wider community and listen to the feedback we receive.
We will do our best to answer any questions and address issues or concerns that are raised with us.
When our project progresses into construction, we will continue working closely with the local community to ensure that our work has as little impact on the lives of those living and working in the area and as many long term positive effects as possible.
How we’re embracing artificial intelligence (AI)
We intend to use AI to assist our experienced teams in the analysis of your feedback, so we can categorise key points raised more quickly. You can learn more about how we’re utilising AI on this dedicated web page.
