Overview
Project Update
Following the first round of consultation which took place in 2023 for our East Coast 400kV phase 2 projects, we are taking forward several changes to our initial proposals which include moving the proposed new substation at Fiddes to a new site in Fetteresso Forest, in close proximity to our existing Fetteresso substation.
This new proposed substation is not related to the works required at the existing substation and all queries pertaining to the new proposed substation that makes up part of the East Coast 400kV phase 2 projects should be directed to the projects Community Liaison Manager via TKUP@sse.com. There is also a dedicated project website, which you can access here
About the Project
The existing Fetteresso substation was fully constructed in 2016. Due to various upcoming connections in the area, there is a requirement to extend the substation. The project elements include:
- Substation platform extension
- Associated earthworks
- Upgrading equipment
- Installing additional transformers
- Installing additional bays to facilitate future connections
- All associated protection and control upgrades
The extension construction work is expected to take place approximately between summer 2026 to late 2028. More information will be available in the near future. Please register for project updates to be kept up to date.
Why is the Project Required?
These works are required to allow increased generation capacity access to the transmission system, while keeping the network fully operational and compliant with all necessary technical standards. Without these necessary reinforcements, the network cannot facilitate all generation connections.
Extending the existing substation at Fetteresso addresses this issue and in effect increases the network's efficiency and capability. Power sharing across these circuits becomes more important as generation load increases on the system.
Community Engagement
Throughout the life of our projects, we aim to work positively with local communities and keep people informed about what we are doing. This is particularly important when we are developing a proposal and we want to understand what local people think about our plans.
We endeavour to take the time to discuss proposals with local community councils, encourage engagement from the wider community and listen to the feedback we receive.
We will do our best to answer any questions and address issues or concerns that are raised with us.
When our project progresses into construction, we will continue working closely with the local community to ensure that our work has as little impact on the lives of those living and working in the area and have as many long term positive effects as possible.
How we’re embracing artificial intelligence (AI)
We intend to use AI to assist our experienced teams in the analysis of your feedback, so we can categorise key points raised more quickly. You can learn more about how we’re utilising AI on this dedicated web page.
